2011 in review by WordPress

I just got this groovy email with an option to make it public, so I did.

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2011 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

A New York City subway train holds 1,200 people. This blog was viewed about 8,100 times in 2011. If it were a NYC subway train, it would take about 7 trips to carry that many people.

Click here to see the complete report.

I thought it was pretty cool.

I hope to hit 10,000 views by Simplywe’s 1st birthday in February.  It’s a long shot, but I have hope.

Old Into New

I have a new favorite thrift store.  It’s St. Vincent De Paul.  They have the kind of stuff you’d find buried in your grandma’s attic.  Long lost awesomeness.  This is the kind of stuff my dreams are made of.

IMG_6827

I found this case of 200 Davidson Star D vintage glass slides and they called to me.  They were well worth the $25 I paid, though I had to gag the tightwad in me while I paid.  I struggle with paying more than a few dollars for anything at the thrift store, even if it’s amazing and totally worthy of the asking price.  More than once I have been too cheap/stubborn to get what I want.  I leave empty-handed, only to come back for my hearts desire the next day, and find it gone to someone sharper than I.  This day though I listened to my gut and I’m so glad I did.

I have been filling the slides up with bits from vintage books found in their 10¢ bins.

You will be seeing these in my, soon to open, Etsy store.

I’m so excited and having a ton of fun!

Organized

My beloved art closet.

IMG_6796

Clutter drives me insane.  Organization calms me.

IMG_6811

I have wanted to put that clothes bar to use for a year now, but wasn’t sure how.

Enter growing supply of cool coffee mugs.  I love them, but they were taking up too much shelf space.

IMG_6803

Der took the bar down for me so I could string the cups up.

IMG_6804

IMG_6808

They are up, out of the way and I can move them from side to side.

IMG_6809

Happy sighs.

IMG_6815

My inspiration door.  It’s a work in progress.  I just Mod Podged some of my favorite things directly to the door.  Whenever I look at it, it makes me want to create.

Globetastic!

Check out the GIANT vintage globe I scored at Goodwill.

Old, colorful, metal globes are so cool! AND it was only 5 bucks!

Mini Hike

On our way back down Mt. Lemmon last week, I kept asking Derek to pull over so I could take pictures.

IMG_6628

At one of the pullouts, we went on a mini hike.  The views were breathtaking!

IMG_6638

Conrad and Ami took turns looking through the binoculars backwards.  They thought it was hilarious that everything looks smaller.

Snow Day

This is one of those posts where I hope your internet connection is super fast, because there are a ton of photos.

We live less than an hour from Mt. Lemmon.  It’s one of the many perks of living in Tucson.

IMG_6472

IMG_6476

In a matter of a few miles the scenery changes from beautiful, saguaro filled mountains, to gorgeous pine trees and snow.

Ami’s sled is a trash can lid.

He’s my brooder.  That’s his broody face.  I think he was having trouble deciding if he should keep making snow angels, sled some more, or build a snowman.  Seriously.  I kept telling him there was plenty of time to do all three.

Jermia and Der were throwing snow onto the suburban.

IMG_6577

These guys are Bob the Blob, and Eduardo.  Jeremia made and named them.  They stayed on the bumper almost all of the way home.

IMG_6574

They’re teasing me because I kept telling them all not to eat the snow.

I love the icicles all over the rocks.

We had SO MUCH FUN!

The boys thanked us over and over and Ami and Conrad said it was the best day ever.

Family fun days are the best!

A Visit With Keegan!

We made a trip to Phoenix and were lucky enough to spend some time with Keegan.

My gorgeous guys.  The only one missing is Benny. :(

IMG_6447

We don’t get to see Keegan nearly enough.

I was still a kid when I had him, so we basically grew up together.  We haven’t had an easy go of it, but I think we are both stronger for it.

I love you Keegle Beagle!  I can’t wait until next time.

Fun With Felt: Wreaths

The prep work for these was much faster and easier than the trees.

IMG_6429

I used pinking shears to cut felt into squares.

The boys used needle and thread to string them.

IMG_6399

They added silver beads ever few squares or whenever they remembered.

IMG_6398

We made these right after the trees and I think they were relieved not to have to concentrate so much.

IMG_6396

I think they turned out really cute and I love how colorful they are.

IMG_6386

Jeremia being an adorable goofball.

I’m such a lucky mom.

Fun With Felt: Christmas Trees

I found the inspiration at Walmart and thought it would be a fun project for the boys.

IMG_6293

This project took a lot of prep work.

At first I looked around the house for round things to use as templates.  I quickly realized that wasn’t the most effective way.  Enter the amazing and versatile toilet paper roll.

IMG_6301

I cut them down the center.

IMG_6302

Then cut them into thirds.

IMG_6304

And finally made them into various sized circles with scotch tape.

IMG_6306

For the bigger circles, I taped two bits of roll together.

IMG_6308

Because felt is a nightmare to trace things on, I used a stamp pad. It helped speed up the process.

IMG_6315

I stacked the felt when I cut the circles to save time.  3 pieces was the magic number to cut through. When I tried to do 4  they came out a little too sloppy.

IMG_6322

The boys were concentrating so hard.  This was Ami and Conrad’s first time using a needle and thread.  They kept accidentally pulling their needle off of the thread.  After about the 6th time of re-threading Conrad’s I looked over and saw him licking his needle trying to make the thread go through.  He’d seen me do it so many times, but didn’t realize I’d been licking the thread, not the needle.  The cuteness overwhelmed me.

IMG_6352

I gave them the circles stacked in order. They started with the biggest one and work up to the smallest with each shade of green.

IMG_6354

They  kept forgetting to add a bead between each disc. They each had to go back and redo the ones they missed several times.

IMG_6355

IMG_6359

They look like they weren’t having fun, but they were just focussed.

I made the stumps and stars to save time and hot glued the snow on.

IMG_6405

Conrad and Ami gave theirs to their teachers for Christmas. They were a big hit.

IMG_6404

I like ours more than the original one.

Paper Box

I saw this one on Pinterest and HAD to make my own.

IMG_6407

I made it while watching An Affair To Remember.  I’d never seen it.  Such a good movie.  I’ll forever be reminded of it when I look at this fun little creation.

IMG_6411

I asked Ami what I should put in it and he said “something very special to you”.  When I told him he wouldn’t fit in it he laughed and said, “No, something small.”  He’s so patient with silly old me.

IMG_6410

It’s amazing what can be created with paper and glue. The possibilities are endless.

Tonight I made another one while watching Jane Eyre.  Netflix is lame for being so greedy, but I do love the convenience of it.
