Iced Tea That Tastes Like A Blueberry Muffin?!

Yes!  Perfect for those days when you want a blueberry muffin, but don’t feel like chewing. You know because those types of days come along so often.

Seriously though it’s a no calorie drink that’s delicious!

IMG_7860

I pop two of these Lipton blackberry pomegranite green tea bags and one regular black tea bag into my iced tea maker and a few minutes later I am sippin’ on deliciousness. I don’t know why adding the black tea makes such a big difference, but it does.

IMG_7858

If you don’t have a tea maker yet, I implore you to get one STAT.

IMG_7863

It tastes great with no sweetener and to-die-for with a little sugar.

Let me know if  you try it.

PS. I forgot to mention that’s for 1 gallon of tea.

Let’s Paint (the rest of) The Fence

This time we had more colors to choose from since I stocked up on cheap paint.

IMG_7824

Derek took everything off of the fence and prepped it for us with a quick coat of old white paint.  This side of the fence was darker and more dried out so the white definitely helped the colors stand out.

It felt more like work this time. I think because it was planned.

Last time we did it on a whim.

IMG_7834

IMG_7829

It was definitely worth it though.

We still haven’t hung anything back up.  This side had all of our old signs on it and we’re having trouble deciding how much we want to cover, because it’s so pretty.

Gifts

One of my favorite blogs is Geninne’s Art Blog.  It’s pretty popular, and with good reason.  It’s gorgeous over there.  Geninne does these amazing watercolors, mostly birds.  All of her birds have smiling eyes and tend to make me smile too.

I found her blog through Pinterest many months ago and have been back every day since.  She shares her art, her home, her family and they are all wonderful.

She often posts photos of a Vermilion Fly-catcher that lives nearby.  While searching old books for clippings to put in my slides, I came across some illustrations of a Vermilion Fly-catcher.  I instantly thought of Geninne and wanted to make a slide for her as a thank you for all of the inspiration her blog provides. So I made this.

I emailed her asking for her address so I could send her a small gift of appreciation.  I felt like a total creeper, but she was so kind. Not only does she have light-hearted and beautiful art, but a soul to match.

Her response was that she would send me her address, but only if I sent her mine so she could send me a little gift too.  What a lovely surprise that was.

I received her gift yesterday.  All I can say is  me-oh-my and sigh.

IMG_7849

She sent me these lovely gift tags that are made from her “oops” prints.

One of them is from a favorite piece that is coincidentally my desktop background.  That was a fun bonus.

IMG_7854

When I opened the envelope the tags were safely contained in a plastic envelope.  What I thought was just cardboard backing to keep them safe ended up being another surprise when I turned it over.

I found this little guy staring up at me, matted, addressed and signed!

IMG_7843

How lucky am I?  Very.

I have the perfect home for him too.

Isn’t he gorgeous!

Do yourself a favor and check out her blog.

Vibrant Paper Cows

I saw this pin on Pinterest and thought it would make a great art project for the boys.

257268197433281475_t0LHZSqe_c

Using that as a reference I drew an outline of a cow and cut it out for a template.

I centered and traced the template onto 12×12 pieces of bright scrapbook paper.  Then cut them out with an exacto knife because I wanted the outside frame of the cow to be intact.

I also cut the cardstock into strips all different widths.

I did all the prep work the night before.

IMG_7792

The boys each got a sheet of 12×12 scrapbook paper to glue the strips on. I gave them black or white because we don’t use those colors very often.  It would be a good way to use any paper you don’t like, since it won’t show.

I had them use glue sticks because when I made mine I used elmer’s and it got crinkly.

IMG_7789

IMG_7803

The rules were not to leave any gaps and to vary the colors and widths.

IMG_7813

They did great.

After they were done gluing the strips I gave them the cow negative to glue on top.

IMG_7819

IMG_7821

IMG_7817

They are so bright and cheerful.

I think they are adorable and they were fun, quick and simple.

Rooster Cogburn Ostrich Ranch 2 of 2

The folks over there are brilliant!

IMG_7514

The goat penthouse was ingenious!  Ami kept going back to feed them in the penthouse.

IMG_7674

First you put food in the cup (a wiffle ball with the top cut off).  Next you crank the wheel (sandbuggy rims with handles) and the giant belt takes the snack up to the goats.

IMG_7513

IMG_7521

The goats get all excited as the ball get closer and closer.

IMG_7522

They also have goats you can hand feed and pet.

IMG_7587

They look like bunch of mounted goat heads at first, which is disturbing, but then it’s just funny to see them clambering to be the near the food.

IMG_7598

We all took turns kissing them.  Actually we were holding food between our teeth for them, which sounds grosser than it was.

IMG_7600

IMG_7602

IMG_7603

IMG_7604

IMG_7605

Next we fed the deer.

We all want one for a pet now…not that we are ever going to get one, but we can pretend.

IMG_7613

They are so sweet, gentle and cute.  Like goats they only have teeth on the bottom in front.  I did not investigate the backs of their mouths, but it’s a pretty safe bet that they have top teeth in back.

IMG_7624

And because we love making out with animals some of us fed them with our mouths too.

IMG_7615

It cracks me up how this one looks like it’s going to eat JP’s face.

Two things I know about this photo:

1. I love nuzzling with deer.

2. I need a hair cut!

IMG_7695

IMG_7701

IMG_7511

I didn’t even have food in my mouth for this one.  I think we might be engaged.

The deer were my favorite, but the larkeets were a close second.

IMG_7764

They flock to you the second they see nectar cups in your hands.

IMG_7725

This is me trying to open the nectar cups for the boys.  I learned later that the birds will take the lid off themselves if you hold it for them.

IMG_7763

That expression is priceless.

Rooster Cogburn Ostrich Ranch Part 1 of 2

We took so many photos I had to break it into 2 posts.

If you have never been to Rooster Cogburn Ostrich Ranch, you are seriously missing out!

It’s located in Picacho Peak right off of the I-10 between Tucson and Phoenix.

They offer monster truck tours of the ranch.  The tour is full of cool facts about the ranch and the southwest.

IMG_7777

IMG_7776

IMG_7774

IMG_7773

The tour took us past an ostrich nest.  The nest is just a little dip the ostrich dig out.  I would not want to tangle with papa.  He was very aware of us.  I have no doubt that if someone was foolish enough to go near him he would tear them up.  The public is only allowed to interact with the female ostrich because the males are too aggressive. Here we are safe and protected in the monster truck.

IMG_7538

Our tour guide shared a frozen and very dead Diamondback Rattlesnake with us.  We all got chance to touch it (not on the head, because the venom is still just as dangerous even when it’s dead).

IMG_7550

IMG_7551

She must have told us at least 10 times not to touch the head before she brought it around for us all to touch.  Ten times and Ami still reached straight for its head, he was so excited.  Luckily she was quick and stopped him.

The highlight of the tour was definitely ostrich fishing.

IMG_7562

IMG_7567

IMG_7576

This one was infatuated with my shoe.  She kept pecking at it over and over again.

IMG_7586

Back on the ground we hand fed the big birds.

IMG_7711

Their beaks are super strong, but as long as you feed them with your hand flat it’s painless.

IMG_7654

If you aren’t brave enough to do that, but still want to have fun, they will catch the feed in mid-air if you toss it to them.

IMG_7658

IMG_7524

One of the greatest things about the ranch is that they are always adding new stuff.

Today was the first ever day they had duck feeding.  Ducks are Ami’s favorite animal so he was over the moon.

IMG_7660

IMG_7661

It really tickles when they eat out of your hand.

And then there were the little donkeys.

IMG_7482

IMG_7480

Their noses are so soft and they are so gentle and friendly.

IMG_7643

IMG_7772

We shared a moment.

Tomorrow: Larakeets, goats, and deer -OH MY!

Ami The Storyteller

IMG_7369

This is a photo of Ami showing his inky finger that was supposed to be included in yesterday’s post, but I pulled it for today’s, because I felt this story deserved to stand alone.

See that scrape on Ami’s forehead?

He had been spinning around on loose gravel, being a goofy boy earlier that day.  He lost his footing and broke the subsequent fall with his face.  That was Saturday.

Fast forward to Tuesday, their first day back after the long weekend.

I picked Ami up from school and his teacher asked me if it was true about the parrot.

I thought she had confused me with someone else.  She saw my bewilderment and informed me that my baby  boy had told the whole class in earnest that he was attacked by a parrot at a petting zoo.

Attacked? By a? Parrot??!!??

When I asked Ami, fighting the giggles, why he made up such a story, he told me he couldn’t remember how he’d really done it.

“So your first thought was a parrot attack?” I asked, no longer able to control my laughter.

He shrugged and said, “Yeah” like it was the most natural conclusion.

IMG_7369

So I guess if I ever need to come up with a tall tale on the fly I can count on Ami to help me out.

Quick and Easy Thank You Cards

We had a stellar Christmas and even though we are halfway through January we just sent out our thank you cards for our gifts.  It’s never too late to say thank you.

For these thank you cards I folded cardstock in half and cut them to fit some spare card envelopes I had on hand.

IMG_7383

We put the ink pads I scored at Goodwill to use for this project.

I had the kids each spell out “Thank you” using their finger prints.  Jeremia had an easy time of it.  Conrad had to do a practice one and Ami needed a little help from Dad.

IMG_7358

Making the letters wasn’t hard, but getting the spacing right proved to be a challenge.

IMG_7360

IMG_7363

After they finished the outside, I told them they could make any fingerprint creature they wanted, except a bird since that’s what we put on our Christmas cards.  Then we passed them all around so we all had a chance to “sign” them.

IMG_7364

IMG_7365

IMG_7380

IMG_7382

Fingerprint art is so much fun and the possibilities are endless.

Jeremia did aliens. I did piggies. Conrad and Ami switched it up doing people, aliens, robots and finally caterpillars. Der did adorable jumping people.

We had fun and laughed a lot.  Good times!
