Rockets!

Jeremia scored a rocket set at Goodwill.  He got $50 worth of rocket gear for a whopping $3!

We went to the park and had some scientific fun with a little physical education thrown in.

He wore lab glasses to make the whole experience feel more authentically geeky.

Countdown…5…4…3…2…1…

liftoff!!!

So fantastically fun and cool and educational!  I highly recommend it.

The science part is launching the rocket.  The P.E. part is running to catch it all the way across the park as it parachutes down.

While they were chasing the last rocket I snapped this shot of the gorgeous sky.

Ram

I didn’t know I wanted a ram head, until I saw it.

The moment I laid eyes on it, I knew it was coming home with me.

Once home, I introduced it to the magical powers of spray paint.

It’s been thanking me ever since.

Vintage Film Slides!

Not too long ago I was lucky enough score multiple boxes of film slides.

Slides are just cool.

Most are from the 60′s with a few in the 50′s and 70′s.

I really want the red chairs in this one.

The people who took these photos traveled extensively. So far the vast majority of them are of scenery from the places they traveled.  Scenery can be hard to date and somewhat boring.  For the love of Pete, put someone in the photo, it makes it more interesting.  If it weren’t for the date on the slide, I would be clueless as to when many of them were taken.

When there are people in them, I get excited and my mind wanders.  I wonder where they are now and if they remember that photo being taken.

I’ve only looked at about 20% of them so far.  I like to savor the treasure and drag it out as long as possible.

There are some military photos.  There are even a few of men hanging out in bunkers.  I imagine their fear about the uncertainty of the future and think about loved ones  anxiously awaiting their safe return.

It’s easy to get lost looking at them.

There are over 1,000 slides all together.

I was ecstatic when I found them, because I have been wanting vintage slides ever since I saw this on Craftster

Details about how it was made can be found here.

Instantly, I knew that I needed to make my own and set out in search for slides.  Finding slides isn’t hard, but finding slides that don’t cost too much can be challenging.  Good thing I love the hunt.

I plan on making my own curtain with all of the scenery slides and saving the people slides for a project that’ll be a little more protected from the sun.  Now I just have to decide which window to make it for…

When I do finally get around to making it, you all will be the first to know.

Amazing Homemade R2D2 Costume

Jeremia loves, loves, loves Star Wars, so when he found this homemade costume at Goodwill, he was thrilled.

The price was too steep for me, so I snapped a few shots with my phone, and we will make our own.

Whoever created this is a genius!

Now we just need to be on the lookout for a cheap, white, plastic trash can and a large metal mixing bowl.

Ami and Conrad have declared that they want to be R2D2 now also.  We’ll see what Jeremia has to say about that, since I doubt he wants to be all matchy-matchy with his brothers for Halloween.

Fun Find

A whopping 3 bucks is what this cost me.

Not only is it cool looking, it’s fun to play with.  Now I just need to find a fun, brightly colored, vintage typewriter for cheap.  My eyes are pealed

Fiddling

Remember those diodes I found thrifting?

Well I fiddled with them and made these:

I have no idea what to do with these delicate creations, but had fun making them.  There are still a gazillion of them left, so I wonder what else I will think of.

Scrabble Letter Magnets

I love Scrabble tiles.  I’ve always wanted to make something with them, but could never decide what.  The crafters block ended last week, when I found two Scrabble games, at my favorite thrift store, for a smokin’ price.  It finally hit me-such a simple idea-why hadn’t I thought of it sooner?!

Magnets!

I got both games, took myself to Michael’s, and got a giant roll of magnet tape.  When I got home, I sat for two hours cutting strips of magnet to fit the backs of both sets of tiles.

My first thought was to put them on the fridge, but then I started thinking about the kids being congregated around the fridge all of the time and quickly decided to come up with a plan B.  Der and I checked out sheet metal, but I was too cheap for that.  Then we went to Auto Zone to look at their drip pans, because I remember seeing somewhere on the vast internet that a mom had used one to create a play center for her toddler.  For only ten bucks, the price was right.

Der hung it on the water heater closet door, just outside the kitchen in the hallway.  The lighting isn’t that great for photos, but it is the perfect out-of-the-way, but still visible place.

I had originally planned on using both sets of letters, but quickly realized that one was plenty, so I will put the other set on Etsy.

The emblem that’s pressed into the pan wasn’t doing much for me, so I made a simple magnetic sign to hide it.

They have been playing with it ever since, practicing their reading and spelling skills and having fun doing it.

This would be great in a classroom!

It’s fun for adults too.  I took a bunch of the letters outside and played with them on our old rusty electric box.

That quote is one of my all-time favorites!

How I managed to forget to post the following pic and story yesterday, I can’t say, but here it is a day late.

The cherry on top of an awesome Mother’s Day was a fun, family trip to Goodwill, where Conrad found this shirt.

It says, “Super mom, super wife, super tired”, but what Conrad read was “Super mom, super wife, super TURD”.

We laughed, and laughed and laughed.  He kept asking me if I was going to get the “super turd” shirt.  I think he’s the super turd, and I love him madly!

Repurposed Folding Closet Doors

I scored 4 of these metal, folding closet doors for a total of $12.

I had seen them for about a month at my favorite thrift store.  I was drawn to them, but couldn’t think what to do with them.  My general rule when thrifting is, if I can’t think of at least one use for it, I won’t get it.  There are always exceptions, but I try hard to follow that guideline, for fear of becoming a hoarder.

I would stare at them each time I was at the shop.  I liked their color and knew I could get them for a good price, but didn’t know what I would do with them.  And then finally inspiration struck.

I decided they would make great shelves.

We separated the doors and stacked them on cinder blocks.  Sometime in the future I may get around to painting the blocks.  I’m thinking charcoal.

The shelves are kind of bare now, but will fill up in no time, I’m sure.

Oh The Possibilities

What shall I make with my latest finds?

So many possibilities.

When I spotted a cool metal tackle box, I was happy.  When I opened it and found all of these cool doohickies I was elated.  When they sold the whole thing to me for $1 I was over-the-moon.

Der tells me they are diodes.  All I see is potential.

I dug through a bucket of old camera gear for all of these lens filters.  I was nervous I would dig them all out and then wouldn’t like the price they named.  I was thrilled when I got them for 25¢ each.

I have a ton of ideas.  I just need to pick one and run with it.

Vintage photo stuff is the bomb!

I should really ground myself from the thrift store until I get some of my project ideas made, but I don’t want to miss anything.

LOVE

I am over the moon for foldable vintage yardsticks.  They are so cool and you can spell stuff with them.

We had an ocean of white brick over our bed so I decided to fill it with a little love.

I haven’t decided if I “love” it there or not.  Time will tell.
