Scrabble Letter Magnets

I love Scrabble tiles.  I’ve always wanted to make something with them, but could never decide what.  The crafters block ended last week, when I found two Scrabble games, at my favorite thrift store, for a smokin’ price.  It finally hit me-such a simple idea-why hadn’t I thought of it sooner?!

Magnets!

I got both games, took myself to Michael’s, and got a giant roll of magnet tape.  When I got home, I sat for two hours cutting strips of magnet to fit the backs of both sets of tiles.

My first thought was to put them on the fridge, but then I started thinking about the kids being congregated around the fridge all of the time and quickly decided to come up with a plan B.  Der and I checked out sheet metal, but I was too cheap for that.  Then we went to Auto Zone to look at their drip pans, because I remember seeing somewhere on the vast internet that a mom had used one to create a play center for her toddler.  For only ten bucks, the price was right.

Der hung it on the water heater closet door, just outside the kitchen in the hallway.  The lighting isn’t that great for photos, but it is the perfect out-of-the-way, but still visible place.

I had originally planned on using both sets of letters, but quickly realized that one was plenty, so I will put the other set on Etsy.

The emblem that’s pressed into the pan wasn’t doing much for me, so I made a simple magnetic sign to hide it.

They have been playing with it ever since, practicing their reading and spelling skills and having fun doing it.

This would be great in a classroom!

It’s fun for adults too.  I took a bunch of the letters outside and played with them on our old rusty electric box.

That quote is one of my all-time favorites!

How I managed to forget to post the following pic and story yesterday, I can’t say, but here it is a day late.

The cherry on top of an awesome Mother’s Day was a fun, family trip to Goodwill, where Conrad found this shirt.

It says, “Super mom, super wife, super tired”, but what Conrad read was “Super mom, super wife, super TURD”.

We laughed, and laughed and laughed.  He kept asking me if I was going to get the “super turd” shirt.  I think he’s the super turd, and I love him madly!
